Walo UK Ltd, Landfill Linings, Hydraulic Asphalt Engineering Specialists
History
1938
During the early evolution of the water generated power stations in Switzerland it was an ideal time to develop new and more impermeable barrier systems for Water Storage projects and in 1938 when the construction works for an equalising reservoir in Switzerland was put out to tender our company made use of the opportunity to propose an alternative system which we had been developing for some time using hydraulic asphalt.
WALO successfully completed this contract and a new concept for impermeable barriers systems had been developed resulting in many large projects being carried out over the following decades using hydraulic asphalt as the impermeable lining system. This equalizing reservoir project still functions properly today to the complete satisfaction of the owners. WALO believes in quality of work, using qualified people and modern well designed equipment on all its contracts.
1938 – 1960
During the period 1938 – 1960 many large Power Stations were built in Switzerland many having large equalising reservoirs lined by WALO using exclusively designed machines built in our own workshops.
1960 – 2003
WALO expanded and developed its hydraulic asphalt knowledge into lining dams and canals. The first Pump Storage reservoir with an output of 1,000MW was constructed enabling our company to further develop and construct new paving equipment for slope lengths of 120m and more.
During this period WALO created the single layered lining system instead of the double layered system normally specified. This proved to be of great benefit because it produced a barrier which was quicker to lay yet prevented air pockets forming between the two layers.
At the end of the 1970’s, WALO developed a dense asphaltic concrete system for the permanent sealing of landfill sites, a product which has helped the waste industry improve its environmental image substantially.
